Concretion rocks.

Aug 24, 2017 · Concretions are hard bodies that form in sediments before they become sedimentary rocks. Slow chemical changes, perhaps related to microbial activity, cause minerals to come out of the groundwater and seal the sediment together. Most often the cementing mineral is calcite, but the brown, iron-bearing carbonate mineral siderite is also common.

An ironstone (76) is a sedimentary rock that contains more than 15% iron, which may be present as variable proportions of iron-bearing minerals such as goethite, siderite, and berthierine. Sedimentary ironstones may be hard and calcareous and contain quartz grains, ooliths, pebbles, and a wide variety of macrofossils.

Coprolites – rock-hard dino doo, fossilized feces, silicified scat, petrified poo – are more than just the butt of jokes. They are invaluable windows into the lives of long-gone creatures. ... From left to right, an iron concretion, extruded plaster, snakeskin agate, and an iron nodule masquerade as coprolites. (Lori Carter photo)Normally, a nodule has a warty or knobby surface and exists as a discrete mass within the host strata. In general, they lack any internal structure except for the preserved remnants of original bedding or fossils. Nodules are closely related to concretions and sometimes these terms are used interchangeably. This is just one method by which nature produces rocks that resemble eggs. Sedimentary concretions are another common imposter. Concretions often form when some object acts as a “seed” for the deposition and cementation of sequential layers of sediment. On occasion, the matter that initiates the concretion, the “seed,” can be a fossil.
